”I have a seven-year-old child who believes in magic, with a force that is equal parts witchy wonder and heart-breaking desperation. Their belief goes way beyond the secret movement of toys and conversations with cats, but isn’t this as fine a way as any to move throughout a world that slowly but inevitably crumbles around us? My wife and I tell our child, “We have stories. We have art.” But we know that’s not enough. They will continue to mutter spells against their bullies, and wish away the wind.

I have to admit, theirs is the life of an artist, not so different than mine. While I don’t believe in magic — or astrology or fate or god — I do believe in belief and the power it wields over our lives, no matter who we are. I have to ask myself, What do I know about the turning of the universe? How could any of us know the truth about god? There may be a kind of faith in all of us, the very one that gives us hope for a better day and the will to try and make it one, even in the face of horrors big and small and never-ending. And in the meantime we have art.” — Dan Estabrook
